I have been in both the middle school and the high school level now and if I had my choice, I think I would actually choose the middle school level. After spring break I will be starting my student teaching at the elementary school level. I think it is important for all of us to experience all levels because what I thought I would want has definitely changed. Fast food seems to be a normal part of their daily intake. Walking down the hall ways at the high school I constantly see the students carrying a 44oz. soda in their hand. I know for some that this is the only thing they have had for lunch. I have not been to the cafeteria here at the high school, but I did visit the middle school cafeteria a few times. I was sort of blown away with the different items offered. Pizza, chicken nuggets w/tater tots, taco salad with chips, meatball sandwiches, etc. I learned that the salad bar was basically taken out of the cafeteria because the portions couldn't be controlled. I guess I don't see what is wrong with a student over doing it at the salad bar. Not only are the kids lacking in exercise, but their nutrition basically SUCKS!
